Maths
At Northfield, we aspire that our children should leave their primary education as confident, resilient mathematicians who have a secure understanding of the skills required to approach any maths problem. We aim to ensure that every child enjoys and achieves success in mathematics and that they develop their mathematical knowledge and skills through high-quality teaching. We pride ourselves on providing pupils with many opportunities to explore and develop an understanding of mathematics that will be relevant and useful in their future studies and in the world of work. We appreciate that mathematics is an essential skill within school and everyday life, therefore we deliver a high-quality mathematics education to enable our children to have a foundation for understanding the world, an ability to reason mathematically and to be curious about the subject.

Features of Effective Teaching in Maths
Vocabulary
The importance of language in learning mathematics cannot be overstated. We understand mathematical ideas by making connections between language, symbols, pictures and real-life situations (Haylock and Cockburn, 2003).
The documents above include mathematical vocabulary that we use in school within each year group. Teachers and children use these definitions within their maths learning. Parents can use them to support their children at home.
Pupil Voice @ Northfield
We value the views of our pupils and hold regular pupil voice sessions with children across school to hear their thoughts and opinions about their maths learning.
"When you’ve learnt and practised your facts, you just know the answer…like 2 x 5 = 10. You just know it." Year 3 child
"Time to Solve helps to get your mind working and helps you to practice your maths." Year 4 child
"I love Mastering Number because my favourite subject is maths. It means I get to do maths twice a day!" Year 4 child
"I’ll never stop learning maths. I always do Times Tables Rockstars at home so I can get faster at times tables and beat my speed. I always practice at home!" Year 4 child
"I like maths because we always learn new things and I find out how to work out new things like the area of shapes." Year 5 child
